In terms of the schedule for the week during the day. It's not guarantee that we will be working at the Musicians' Village, but a strong chance. From what we've heard, there's a good chance we'll be able to help out a soup kitchen around the area and help with their basic needs. So, we'll give people an option for that day to continue with construction or to work there.
Bring a few nice pairs of clothes for the evenings. They'll be fun and we'll go out to eat one night so I guess bring something fairly nice for that. For work clothes, I wouldn't bring too many clothes for work unless you're trying to impress anyone else on the trip. We'll all be grubby, gross, and smelling pretty bad those days. The church has 6 showers.
The drive down from Harrisonburg is about 16 or 17 hours. We'll make stops along the way for food, restroom breaks, gas, and just times to switch drivers so nobody gets tired. The address of the church is:
Vieux Carre Baptist Church
711 Dauphine St
New Orleans, LA 70116-3016
For what to bring for sleeping... The church provides enough beds for 50. I think we'll need sheets and such, but I'll find out for certain as soon as I can.
One day we're doing an outreach type day with just talking with people. We're encouraging people just to listen because Everyone has a story. Seriously, it's a great chance for you to hear what they went through during the storm, whether it be the homeless now, store owners, locals... everyone went through something different. You don't have to share you're faith if you're uncomfortable with that and you don't have do take part in that day, but I definitely recommend it. It's a humbling experience and they Love to talk. I could go on about this, but it could probably be the best part of the trip because it's a way that we can encourage them that people are still helping out the city and that they're not forgotten which most people get the sense of down there.
